Age Divisions
Players try out for the age level associated with their grade as of Fall 2026. Volleyball age groups don't follow a strict birthdate cutoff — they correlate to grade level. (We do have a June 30th cut-off as a backstop, but it only affects a small percentage of athletes who are very old for their grade. We cross-check birth dates in advance and reach out if an age waiver is needed.)
What to expect
Arrive 15–20 minutes early. Bring your registration confirmation, signed paperwork, and tryout fee. Athletes will be assigned a number for evaluation.
Coaches evaluate passing, setting, hitting, serving, defense, and athleticism through structured drills and small-sided games.
Athletes are placed in scrimmage situations so coaches can see how players read the game, communicate, and compete.
Offers are typically extended within 24–48 hours of tryouts via email. Athletes have 24 hours to accept their offer.
What to bring
After tryouts
You'll receive an email within 24–48 hours of tryouts. Each offer is for a specific program (National, Travel, Select, or Regional) and a specific team within that program.
Athletes have 24 hours to accept or decline. Acceptance includes a deposit (applied to season dues) to lock the roster spot.
Season dues can be paid in full or via a structured payment plan through the Sports Engine portal. Dues include practices, tournaments, and coach travel — they do not include uniforms or the player's own travel and lodging for tournaments.
Uniform packages range from $100–$350 depending on the program and required pieces. Full uniform package details are released at tryouts.
About two weeks after each tryout, we host a club-wide program meeting for all players and at least one parent or guardian — attendance is mandatory. We'll begin sizing for uniforms, collect season contracts, walk through USA Volleyball membership instructions and the player and parent codes of conduct, and review the season handbook in depth.
Practice schedules are released well in advance — typically 2–3 months before the season begins.
FAQ
Yes — there is a $45 tryout fee which includes both tryout days, a tryout tee, the Team Genius Tryout Results Tracker, coaches and staff pay, admin fee, facility, and equipment.
We ask families to try out for the highest program based on the time and financial commitment associated with each program. We have multiple programs to fit every family's busy schedule.
We highly recommend that players attend both days of tryouts so that our evaluators and coaches can get to know your athlete and see their whole skill set.
Absolutely not. We host optional Sunday training sessions during the high school season, which will not interfere with high school commitments.
Unless you've had a conversation with our admin staff at Piedmont, we ask that you sign up for the age group that correlates to your grade in Fall 2026.
Athletes can start receiving offers as early as the first day of tryouts, though most offers go out on the Saturday following the second tryout. Once an athlete receives an offer, they're given a timeline to make a decision — we ask for a fast commitment period out of respect for alternates patiently waiting to hear back.
Within each bid is a detailed explanation of what team the athlete was selected for. We have 4 different tiers of programming with a "trickle-down" process — if an athlete wasn't selected for the level they registered for, we automatically consider them for the next program level down. We typically offer 1–3 teams per program, so it's possible your daughter is offered for a higher team but in a lower program than she registered for.
Piedmont uses a "trickle-down" process when forming teams. If we can't offer you a bid at the level you selected, you're automatically considered for the next program level down before receiving an alternate bid. Likewise, if we think your athlete can play at a higher level than the one she signed up for, we'll reach out to you about the change.
Uniform packages range anywhere from $100–$350 depending on the program and the required pieces. Full uniform package information is released at tryouts.
For all programs, season dues include practices, tournaments, and coach travel. Dues do not include the player's own travel and expenses to tournaments, or the uniform package.
